The Art of Mothering and the Alchemy of Becoming

Sixteen years ago this week, I walked through the portal of motherhood which became a threshold that would forever shape my life.

In the tradition of yoga, there are the five acts of Shiva: creation, sustenance, dissolution, grace, and revelation. Motherhood contains them all.

There is nothing quite like this act of creation, of sustaining something so cherished and sacred. The journey unfolds in eras, each one rising, blooming, and dissolving into the next. There are moments of awe and wonder and moments of revelation, often wrapped in struggle and growth.

Like any devoted art form, parenthood asks everything of us—presence, patience, surrender. It requires constant attention, and constant letting go. I might think we were heading one way, only to find that the path asked me to pivot, to listen, to trust.

The early years go so slowly: the long days, the sleepless nights, the steady tending to a forming human. Then the pace picks up. They grow. They shift. One day, they move through the fire of adolescence, emerging with their own insights, strengths, opinions, and challenges.

And while we, as parents, are here to guide and support them, we cannot, and should not, attempt to control who they are becoming in themselves and the world. Why would we want to?

Then suddenly, somehow time speeds up. Sixteen years have passed and we find ourselves looking at a soul who has shaped us just as much as we’ve shaped them. The act of raising a child mirrors the healing journey; it begins slowly, often with great effort. It demands devotion. But over time, those quiet moments of grace, struggle, and insight begin to weave transformation into the fabric of who we are and who we’re evolving into.

There is no going backward in parenting, only forward. There may be plateaus, pauses, and pivots, but as we stay present with the unfolding story, our evolution becomes inevitable.

Motherhood helped me heal parts of myself I didn’t even know were broken. It demanded for me to grow and change, again and again, and it has gifted me the sacred reminder that we are never done becoming.

I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything.

These days, I feel the quiet confidence and satisfaction that comes from showing up fully—for myself, my family, and the women I serve. Arriving in my vulnerability, in my wholeness, in my radiance.

We need young warriors of light in this world, souls who will help guide the vision of what’s to come, who will dissolve what no longer serves, and who will midwife the next era with creativity, integrity, strength and heart.

My son’s arrival rocked us with the unexpected and, just like life, the story is rarely linear. It twists and turns and we rarely knew where it was leading us. As my husband and I paid more attention and care along the way, it took us exactly where we’re meant to be, often against our will and judgement.

I’m still learning. Still humbled. Still completely in love with the unfolding.

I love you Lucien. We love you and are beyond proud of the man you’ve become.

With all my heart,

Raphaela Fritz🤍
